Blog Review: Facing Autism in New Brunswick

I was searching around in Digg, looking for bloggers who are commenting about autism. I found Facing Autism in New Brunswick. I was struck by a recent post about the changing autism research paradigm. This post tells us that,

The new paradigm views autism as both preventable and treatable by a combination of behavioral and biomedical approaches and autistic children as recoverable.
This matches what Isabel and I have found. No, we are not researchers. We are practitioners. Our practice is one where we work with children who have developmental problems (developmental disability as well as developmental delay).

Across the whole spectrum from autism to ADHD to auditory processing disorders to dyslexia, we find that these children have a tendency to be extremely sensitive to environmental factors. This sensitivity seems to cause a certain array of functional shut-down. This shut-down prevents normal development.

When we clean up the environmental factors (we refer to these as the real "environmental toxins") to which the child is sensitive, the child re-engages the world. At this point we have to get the child to perform a series of exercises which builds (or re-builds) those brain capabilities that have been lost because of the shut-down.

The re-engaging the world happens in the first few weeks of working with us. The task of developing those brain capabilities takes months. As part of developing those capabilities, the child can now learn the socialization and content pieces that have been missed (while they were stuck).

We are very excited to see that the academic research community is starting to adjust its paradigm to be more realistic. Autism-spectrum disorders, and the other developmental problems with which we work, are not a problem of neurology or behavior. They are a problem of development.

The 'real' research questions should be about why the developmental process is stuck or sluggish. And, what happens when we re-engage the child?

Facing Autism in New Brunswick is a blog that is full of juicy, meaty posts which highlight these concepts. I suggest reading Autism Newsflash - Neurodiversity and Autism Deficits and Autism Is Not the Essence of Conor which show the range of thoughts and concepts this commited dad has in his family and his blog.

Information about what else we do

Isabel Aguilar (my wife) and I also work with children with developmental problems. If you have family members with Developmental Delay or Developmental Disability, we provide an international consulting program (in English and Spanish) to get them back on track, developmentally. Our program encourages the child’s natural tendency to mature appropriately. Our clients become age-appropriate. We are the only service we have found which reliably, consistently, and predictably re-engages the child’s normal movement through the developmental stages.

Developmental Problems

Developmental problems” is a term we use to talk about ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), dyslexia, LD (Learning Difficulty), GDD (Global Developmental Disorder), APD (Auditory Processing Disorder), autism, Asperger’s, PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified), and many other diagnoses. Our Developmental Discovery System™ has been shown to help these children fill-in the gaps in their developmental stages.

"developmental problem" is one of our key tags for our sites and blogs. The reason we have oriented ourselves around this term is that all of the 'official' labels, listed in the paragraph above, have little meaning in describing what use be done to really help these children. Those labels clarify the constellation of symptoms the child presents (displays). But the real problem is the developmental process is stuck and needs to be re-engaged.

Blog Review: Fiber Optic 101

Fiber Optic 101

This is a blog about fiber optic technology. This is an exploration of the concepts, technologies, and applications of fiber optics. This includes telephone, Internet, cable TV, and lighting applications. This blog is like an introductory course with a lot of things being touched on without many specific technical details; it is a good overview. The blog starts with a good introduction and overview for those who know little or nothing about fiber optic technology and who might find it interesting to know a little more about how digital cable images get into their homes, and why that image quality is so much better than before. It has a short history of fiber optics and talk about how fiber optics has changed how we obtain TV cable signals in our homes; now cable has become digital and this means that it's coming to our homes by fiber optic cable.

The technorati button for this blog is Add to Technorati Favorites and the tags are fiber optic, fiber optic cable, fiber optic technology, and fiber optic scope. And, as part of a good review exchange, I will include an exchange of technorati favs posting.
